Mission Statement

A mission statement's value for marketing is that it helps a company communicate its brand and unique differentiation in the marketplace. It can also enforce messaging. Additionally, it can be used to ensure that all communications from a company or its representatives are consistent.

The mission statement should also speak to the company's impact and philanthropy.

5 Smart Goals

SMART Goals are a popular method for setting effective goals. The acronym SMART stands for:

  • Specific: Goals should be well-defined and clear, avoiding vagueness.

  • Measurable: Goals should have quantifiable criteria for tracking progress and determining success.

  • Achievable: Goals should be realistic and attainable within available resources and constraints.

  • Relevant: Goals should align with the overall business objectives and mission.

  • Time-bound: Goals should have a specific deadline or timeframe for completion.

A note on specificity: Think of this as an exercise in setting a goal that anyone could look into, without having too much prior knowledge, and see that you have accomplished this goal.

Instead of, 'I want to lose 15 pounds this year', think 'I will be celebrating weighing 130 pounds with a glass of champagne and raspberries at 4:45 on Dec 10th at 2:30p CST'. This allows you to be very clear with your subconscious mind/the universe/etc about exactly what you want and when you will be there.

Examples of SMART Goals for Marketing:

  • Increase brand awareness: Increase website traffic by 20% by Feb 21st, 2025 at 3pm CST, through targeted social media advertising and content marketing campaigns.

  • Generate leads: Capture 100 qualified leads per month by offering a free downloadable e-book in exchange for contact information by June 3rd, 2025, 5pm, CST.

  • Improve customer engagement: Boost social media engagement rate (likes, comments, shares) by 15% by March 31st, 2025, 3pm CST by implementing a consistent posting schedule and interactive content.

  • Enhance conversion rates: Increase the website's conversion rate from 2% to 3% within the next year by optimizing landing pages and calls to action by Dec 15th, 2025, 4pm CST

  • Expand market reach: Enter a new geographic market within the next two years by conducting market research and developing a localized marketing strategy by Sept 1, 2025, 12p CST.

By using the SMART framework, marketers can create goals that are more likely to be achieved, leading to improved marketing performance and business results.
